Rubber belted tracks are used when the machine is operated on blacktop and other finished surfaces to reduce damage.
Steel double grouser shoes are recommended for use in demolition and other applications that can severely damage rubber track.
The track drive is compact and fits within the track profile to give maximum protection.
This optional attachment allows better control of the track when working on slopes or carrying severe side loads.
The 127 mm (5 in.) air filter is sized to handle extremely dirty operating conditions.
The 301.8 is equipped with a steel core, double-layer, fin-type radiator, supplying the machine with a large heat exchange capacity.
The electrical harnesses use Deutsch sealed connectors and are designed to meet Caterpillar's high standards of reliability.
A wide range of work tools gives the 301.8 versatility in applications such as building construction, landscaping and demolition.
Equipped with cab or canopy, the 301.8 provides an excellent view to the work area. The optional cab is easy to enter and is equipped with many convenient features.
Tilt-up hood gives access to all major components and service points, making daily maintenance easy.
Caterpillar dealers offer unmatched customer support with excellent equipment management services and fast parts availability, resulting in maximum uptime and minimum repair costs.
This is an optional audible alert to further increase site safety.
The corner panels on the rear of the machine are made of durable, impact-resistant plastic, helping to maintain the appearance of the machine.
The 301.8 can be used as part of a "system solution" to meet the customers' needs. It is capable of partnering other machines to maximize productivity and efficiency.
The control valve assembly is located under the floor plates on the left side of the operator station.
The hydraulic tank is located in the operator station under the right-hand console. The suction port is fitted with a screen to capture large particles from the tank.
All oil returning to the tank passes through a spin-on 10 micron absolute system filter that is located on the return to tank line. The filter is located behind the right hand side rear corner protector, next to the radiator.
An hydraulic oil cooler is standard to allow the 301.8 to work in a wide range of temperature conditions with a wide range of work tools.
Two optional front hydraulic auxiliary circuits are available to provide power to a range of hydromechanical tools, further increasing the versatility of the machine.
A hydraulic pilot control design is used for the control of the stick, bucket, boom and upper frame swing circuits.
The swing circuit with its own hydraulic pump is unaffected by the operation of the front linkage, ensuring constant swing speed and force.
The standard pilot controls are configured to the ISO pattern. A pattern changer is available and allows the operator to choose either ISO or SAE controls.
The optional bio-degradable hydraulic oil is an environmentally friendly alternative to mineral hydraulic oils.
The boom has the typical large excavator curved shape. The boom cylinder incorporates end damping, reducing shock loading and bucket spillage.
The standard boom swing has a cast swing post. The boom swing circuit allows trenching next to walls and obstructions, and the swing cylinder has end damping on both sides to reduce shock loading and bucket spillage.
To reduce service time, low-maintenance type bushings are used in the pin joints of the front linkage. The front linkage uses recessed grease points for maximum protection.
Depending on the model, short and long sticks are available for Caterpillar Mini Hydraulic Excavators.
The boom swing post is offset right of center of the operator's seat to enhance visibility of the work tool. For this reason, the back of the boom will never entirely cover the operator's viewing range.
The cab of the 301.8 offers excellent comfort due to its size which exceeds that of most competitors. Access is from the left hand side.
The canopy version is walk-through, making it possible for the operator to enter and leave the operator station from either side of the machine.
A front washer/wiper unit is provided, and unlike many competitors, wiring does not need to be disconnected when moving the front window.
A choice of seats, vinyl static, vinyl suspension or fabric suspension, with seat belts, are available to meet the requirements of customers.
There is lockable storage area, space for small tools, etc. located under the seat.
Cab and canopy options meet both FOPS ISO 10262 Level I (Falling Objects Protection) and TOPS ISO 12117 (Tip-Over Protection) certification requirements, providing the operator with a safe environment.
Two working lights can be installed on the same machine.
A cab or canopy mounted beacon is available through the parts distribution system for field installation only.
Low effort pilot hydraulics and ergonomically designed controls minimize fatigue and maximize comfort for the operator.
The standard width seat belt on Caterpillar Mini Hydraulic Excavators is 2", but a 3" option is available to meet the legal requirements in the States of California and Oregon in the USA, and in British Columbia in Canada.
