Benefits & Features

Structures

Design

The 252 is built for tough work and designed, built and backed by Caterpillar to deliver exceptional performance and versatility, ease of operation, serviceability and customer support.

Chassis

The chassis includes most of the major structural elements for the machine, provides supporting and mounting surfaces for many components, defines the machine's shape and aesthetics, protects some internal parts and serves as fluid reservoirs for diesel fuel and drive chain lubricating oil. All chassis and cab components are e-coated to prevent rust.

Main Frame

The main frame of the Caterpillar Skid Steer Loader consists of two fully welded heavy-duty structures, the upper frame and the lower frame. Weld-bosses and links are used throughout the frames and provide chafe-free attachment points for hydraulic tubes, hoses and electrical wiring harnesses to prevent damage.

Lower Main Frame

The extended wheelbase gives the 252 stability, better load carrying capabilities and offers a smoother ride. The lower main frame design incorporates the fuel tank to protect it from external damage and a removable belly pan for easy cleaning.

Upper Main Frame

Careful attention was given to the placement of components within the frame to attain a favorable weight distribution. The upper frame forms the loader towers and fenders and serves as the attachment point for the rear-tilting cab and tilt-up cooling package.

Lift Arms

The loader lift arms are purpose-designed to provide a substantially straight load path into the machine, good visibility to the work tool, protect the tilt cylinders and associated hydraulic lines and make getting in and out of the machine as easy as possible. The loader arms are also designed to handle heavy loads without twisting and bending for long life.

Rear Structures

The rear door and upper engine enclosure are made of thick gauge steel to protect the back from impact damage. The bumper incorporates two tie down points for tranporting and is positioned to protect the machine body from dents and scratches. An optional counterweight is also available.

Work Tools

Cat Work Tools

Caterpillar has developed a wide range of performance-matched work tools to meet customer needs. Designed and built to strict Caterpillar standards, Cat Work Tools are machine matched to Cat Skid Steer Loaders and carry with them the Caterpillar reputation for performance, durability and reliability.

Quick Coupler

The mechanical quick coupler interfaces with nearly thirty different Caterpillar Work Tools. The tilting coupler provides high breakout force, excellent visibility to the work tool and unobstructed operator ingress/egress to the cab.

Power Train

Power Train Components

The power train consists of the engine, hydrostatic pumps and motors, joystick controls, sprocket and drive chains, axles, tires and wheels and the cooling and exhaust systems.

Engine

The Cat 3034 diesel engine is a four-cylinder, water-cooled, direct injected power plant. It is positioned in the lower frame for easy service and soft mounted at three points to minimize vibration. Fast-start glow plugs assist in cold weather starting down to -20° C (-4° F), eliminating the use of an ether starting aid.

Cooling System

Air is drawn in from the side of the machine and pushed through the radiator/cooler away from the operator. The grill swings up for cleaning and the entire assembly can be tilted up 45 degrees from the closed position. A sight glass in the radiator expedites daily fluid level checks.

Drive Train

An exclusive anti-stall device incorporated into the 252 drive train delivers maximum power to the wheels to minimize engine stalling. The drive train design reduces the number of seals and leak points. Piston pumps mounted to the engine, provide oil to the drive motors and create a closed loop system.

Closed Loop System

The closed loop system also serves as the primary braking system for the 252. Spring applied and hydraulically released multiple wet disc parking brakes are incorporated into the drive motors. The parking brake is designed to provide a 50 percent slope holding capability.

Axles

Each drive axle is forged and induction hardened for long life. The axle housing has a hard object protective lip when combined with the associated seal helps prevent construction debris from wrapping around the axle and destroying the seal. Axle bearings are permanently sealed and lubricated.

Hydraulic and Electrical Systems

Hydraulic Pumps

A two section, fixed displacement gear pump is driven by splined shaft off the hydrostatic pump at engine speed. The rear section provides flow and pressure to the loader hydraulics and the front section provides flow to the hydraulic fan, hydrostatic charge pump and pilot controls.

Hydraulic Tank

The hydraulic tank is designed to purge air from the oil before entering the suction line to extend component life and a sight glass makes daily fluid level checks easy.

Hydraulic Flow

Hydraulic oil passes through a spin-on filter and a screen is positioned in the hydraulic tank to prevent large debris from being ingested into the pump. A monoblock valve bank reduces the number of seals and leak points so less servicing is required.

Bulk Heads, Hose and Seals

The redesigned bulk head for the standard auxiliary hydraulic quick disconnect coupling resists bending and allows for safe and easy work tool hook-up. XT hose and o-ring face seals ensure a leak free system.

Harnesses, Connectors and Alternator

The 252 has a 12-volt electrical systems. Wiring harnesses are color coded and numbered to make troubleshooting easy if needed. Deutsch connectors seal out moisture and contamination for superior reliability.

Operator Station

Cab

The ergonomic cab is designed to provide the operator with easy to use, pilot operated controls in a comfortable working environment. Twin tilt cylinders, coupled with a wide cab opening, three-point grab iron and deep, skid resistant steps make it easy for an operator to get in and out of the cab. The entire cab also tilts rearward to provide excellent service accessibility.

Standard Equipment

The standard offerings for the 252 operator station are a ROPS/FOPS cab, an adjustable fore/aft static seat with a retractable seat belt, armresets, hand throttle, foot pedal, a rear wall liner, instrument panel and pilot hydraulic control system.

Cab Options

The deluxe cab includes a suspension seat, headliner, horn and additional working lights. A cold weather package is also available that includes sliding side windows, door with wiper and washer, cab heater and engine coolant heater.

Hydraulic Joystick Controls

Like Caterpillar Excavators, the 252 is controlled by two hydraulic joysticks. The right joystick controls loader functions and the left joystick controls machine direction.

Operation

The joystick controls and the "S" control pattern used to operate the 252 significantly reduces operator fatigue when compared to long-throw mechanical levers. A hand throttle allows the engine to run at a constant speed and an optional fourth function control allows the operator to side shift cold planers or angle hydraulic brooms.

Auxiliary Hydraulics

The operator can vary the amount of flow that the work tool receives through the optional auxiliary hydraulic flow switch.

Instrument Panels

Two instrument panels are located in the upper right and upper left corners of the cab to maximize the viewing area to the loader when in the raised position.

Left Control Panel

The upper left control panel contains three rows of indicator lights (LEDs) to alert the operator of abnormal occurances. The key start switch, hour meter, parking brake switch and glow plug switch are also standard.

Right Control Panel

The upper right panel contains a fuel level gauge and a dome lamp, as well as provisions for optional rotating beacon, front working lights and rear-working lights.

Serviceability

Service Access

Service accessibility for Caterpillar Skid Steer Loaders is a key differentiator when compared to its competition. Simplified service is built into the 252's design, and maintenance points are grouped in easily accessible locations.

Engine Access

The rear engine compartment door opens 90 degrees to expose an engine that is mounted lengthwise in the frame. This arrangement gives access to both the left and right side of the engine.

Filters

All filters are easily accessible and vertically mounted, which makes routine service virtually spill-free.

Cooling System

The radiator, hydraulic oil cooler and grill tilt up to make more room during maintenance or to allow cleaning between the grill and cooling package.

Tilting Cab

The cab tilts rearward and is held in place by a self-latching mechanism, exposing all pumps, motors, valves and lines to make repairs easy if necessary.

Ground Level Maintenance

Sight gauges are conveniently located for daily fluid-level checks. SOSSM oil analysis ports are installed to allow regular monitoring of the engine and hydraulic oil quality for preventive maintenance. In addition, ecology drains are fitted to the engine oil pan and hydraulic system, helping prevent spills.
